It’s that time of year again when we are selecting our top 12 photos for inclusion in our annual JRTRO calendar, Just Jacks. jrtro-justjacks2015 There will be 12 main photos selected, as well as 12 side bar photos, and possibly some honorary photos for the inside cover.  In order for your photo to be considered, IT MUST MEET THESE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Be a high resolution photo – 2400 pixels wide on the long edge in horizontal format at 300dpi  (photos taken from cell phones that meet the rest of the requirements will be considered since the quality can be very good nowadays).
  • Be unedited, i.e. don’t crop it and don’t add any extra effects to it
  • Be a JRTRO dog
  • Have a nice background, i.e. Please take a look in the background of your photo for things that probably shouldn’t be there and don’t enhance the image
  • Have the dog comprising most of the photo, or be the centre of attention in the photo
  • please don’t have people in your image, those won’t be considered, we WILL consider, leashes and harnesses because we realize that safety first is important and you might have a FABULOUS photo but a leash on your dog because you were on the go
  • Photos must be in Landscape format (long on the top and short ends on the side)  and must be in Sharp focus

Preference will be given to:

  • ACTION SHOTS!  Jacks do everything!  The calendar is the best avenue to show this off (and give you unlimited bragging rights).
  • SEASONAL SHOTS – Christmas and Halloween in particular, but appropriate shots for New Year’s, Easter or whatever, will be given priority, provided they still meet the above criteria

The fine print:

  • If your photo is selected you will be contacted by September 1.  You will be required to send in a brief write-up/story of your JRT.
  • If your photo is not selected, it is because it either didn’t meet the requirements listed above or perhaps we had 12 other images that worked better this year.  Unfortunately, we are unable to follow up with everyone individually to explain why yours wasn’t selected.
  • Please send your photos to dollack@rogers.com and in the subject line, please put: CALENDAR PHOTO OF [DOG’S NAME]
  • Include your name and the best email address to contact you at IN your email with the photo (helps us keep things straight!)
  • By sending in the photo, you are agreeing that you give permission for the JRTRO to utilize the photo in the 2016 Calendar, Just Jacks.

photos of dogs DOING SOMETHING INTERESTING, that happen to include a person have been used before in the calendar (see 2008 Jasper riding a horse with new owner, Duke on top of his crate playing with a child inside it and Forrest dock diving) so I wouldn’t discourage such photos. They add interest and liveliness.

Hi. I am excited to enter some photos in the contest. I was confused by the requirement for entries to be “2400 pixels wide on the long edge in horizontal format at 300dpi” so I looked it up. From what I read it seems that it doesnt make sense. Here’s a link that expains it http://www.rideau-info.com/photos/mythdpi.html . I just want to make sure that the photos I send dont get rejected.

Photos of dogs should be AT LEAST 2400 pixels wide, because that means they have enough data to PRINT 8 inches wide at 300 dpi, required for HALFTONES at 150 lines per inch. The calendar is output on a high quality digital printer on coated stock. Just take a good sharp photo and send in the original file, not resized, not retouched.
